Representing a landmark moment in the Ocean Explorer series from Selene, the first Selene 78 is under construction slated for delivery in 2015 to its American buyer.
Jet-Tern Marine (China) in partnership with Guido de Groot Design in the Netherlands is also currently building a Selene 92 Ocean Explorer.
Following the Selene Trawler 66 and Selene 92 Ocean Explorer, the construction and sale of the Selene 78 mark the launch of a striking series of Ocean Explorer yachts.
This new flagship 78 is based on the successful Selene 62, but with length and freeboard extended to give greater cruising range and internal accommodations.
Her extensive range and stylish interior make this trawler yacht ideal for long voyages in luxury and comfort. She is most luxurious and commodious.
With its impressive range and stylish interior, the first Selene 78 Ocean Explorer is ideal for long distance (ocean) trips in complete luxury and comfort. The lines of the trawler are based on the larger Selene 92 Ocean Explorer.
Her length is almost 24 metres and with a beam of 6.50 metres. The design offers a larger volume than most yachts in its size thanks to a round bilge and deep hull form and her cruiser stern. These unique characteristics result in a superior sea-going performance and relatively low fuel consumption.
Partly due to this exceptional volume, the yacht offers copious living and sleeping space on board. Each of the sleeping accommodations is spacious, as are the saloon, galley and wheelhouse. The comfort levels on the flybridge and sun deck are unprecedented for this size of yacht, enhanced by a luxury seating area on the foredeck and large dining space on the aft deck.
The luxurious saloon can seat eight comfortably for dinner, and has the added convenience of a day head. Just a few steps away, past the galley, is a very spacious pilothouse which doubles as the command centre for the yacht, and a spectacular entertainment area. Below decks there are four full double staterooms all with ensuite bathrooms. The owners enjoy a full width master stateroom, complete with writing desk and vanity, full height wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom replete with tub and his and hers wash basins.
All owners of a Selene Ocean Explorer yacht enjoy a wealth of freedom regarding the layout and styling of their interior. The yachts are semi-custom built, giving clients the ability to attune their new yacht precisely to their personal tastes. Owners get to influence the interior design in detail, which is of high standard throughout. Based on customers’ wishes, Guido de Groot develops a custom-made interior for each yacht.
“The design of the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer features a living and dining area with a half open galley layout,” explains Guido de Groot. “The full beam master suite has its own private entrance from the main deck with direct access to a separate lower deck office. Two ensuite guest cabins are situated forward of the master. Aft is a lazarette and crew quarters, with space for two crew members.”
The yacht also has a very strong identity in terms of exterior styling says De
Groot: “While most boats in this class are rather ‘static’ in terms of their exterior styling, the Selene 78 Ocean Explorer has dynamic lines and will be instantly recognisable as something new and unique. The biggest achievement of the new design is that the exterior lines are so elegant that you barely notice that she is a yacht with an enormous interior volume. There were no compromises made for any of the on board areas in terms of size.
De Groot says that the challenge for his design team was to be modern while also having the new lines accepted by Selene yacht owners. The new designs have been widely appreciated while also attracting clients who are new to the oceangoing yacht market.
Also, for longer periods on board and feeling at home the interior has to be functional as well be as looking good.
“The first Selene 78 features timeless wood panelling with burl and marquetry inlays combined with luxurious fabrics.”
Like all Selenes, underneath she is a rugged passage maker. A waterline length of 70′-11″, and S/L ratio of 1.44, coupled to 5000 gal. capacity integral FRP fuel tanks and a bulbous bow (optional) provides the ultimate in range and comfort at sea. And, as you would expect with a yacht of this pedigree, she has full height walk-in engine room, a workshop/utility room and separate crews quarters, including shower/head.
