Part 2
At the laidback first evening welcome briefing attending yachts and their crew and media were told that this was all about having fun – as usual. And there were certainly some top moments. The weather gods were very kind; in the spirit of the Rendezvous offering blissful blue skies and some wind as the superyachts cruised along Phuket’s west coast.
The Feadship Challenge (named after the Principal Sponsor Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards) was also a highlight, and is most certainly year after year as those failing in the competition with their boat model creations will be keen on getting another chance to succeed better.
“Mr DJ, can we have ‘I Am Sailing’ because we are about to sink soon,” was certainly one of the most memorable quotes, courtesy of the presenter Martin Carpenter, as one of the boat models was about to capsize. The seaworthiness of the boat models, conjured up by teams from each participating superyacht, were put to test in this most joyful competition. And certainly also whether or not each model’s skipper has enough air in the lungs! Fun fun fun! The Maverick team took home the victor in the end, with a model that at first glance perhaps would not have what it takes. Its chief boat designer (or designers) could take home a lot of credit.
Another highlight was the mermaids: ladies in uniquely designed mermaid suites showcasing their skills on the pool deck and in the swimming pool. Boy, how they became a photo object favourite!
Inevitably these memorable events don’t last forever (which is part of the point: to yearn for the next edition), but before it was time to say ‘See you next year’ Kata Rocks showcased its capabilities in terms of high-level service and sumptuous food with the closing night’s gala dinner. Guests arrived, and especially with all ladies dressed for the occasion, to be welcomed with champagne chilled on ice in oversized silver bowls.
During the buffet dinner, the lively conversations among the guests were interrupted by brief speeches, including the organisers thanking all the sponsors. On a screen a slideshow with images from all the experiences during the event entertained the guests, along with live singing from a wonderful South Korean female vocalist.
With a promise of livening up the proceedings, post dinner continued with a free flow bar and then partying well into the night, including an after party down at Kata beach.
In the closing remarks the Principal Sponsor expressed appreciation for this particular regatta being one of the few events where everyone mingles and socialise, and the hope to see even more superyachts next year, asking everyone to invite more of those to join in. The organisers were also looking forward to seeing all again on the deck at Kata Rocks for the next edition of Asia Pacific Superyacht Rendezvous.
